A Quiet Little Cul-de-Sac in Chili

Sometimes location isn’t about being in the middle of everything.

Sometimes it’s about being just around the corner from it.

Brewster Lane is a tiny residential cul-de-sac tucked off Chestnut Drive in the Town of Chili. With only six homes, it’s easy to travel through this part of western Monroe County for years without ever knowing the street is there.

The surrounding neighborhood developed primarily during the 1950s and ’60s, with additional homes following into the 1970s. Ranches, Cape Cods, Split-Levels and Colonials sit comfortably on lots commonly ranging from roughly a third to half an acre.

These aren’t grand houses or elaborate architecture. They’re the solid, practical homes that came to define much of suburban Rochester during the middle of the twentieth century.

More than half a century later, mature trees, established gardens and generous yards have given the neighborhood a character it simply couldn’t have had when it was new.

And Brewster Lane may be one of its best-kept little secrets.

Our Personal Insights

This is a part of Chili that feels particularly familiar to us.

The neighborhood surrounding Brewster Lane grew substantially during the decades following World War II, as Rochester’s western suburbs expanded and former open land gradually gave way to residential streets.

One name that comes up in the story of this area is Joseph Entress, a well-known Chili builder during the postwar era.

The family at 9 Brewster Lane tells us that Entress built their home in 1955. The house has remained in that same family ever since, and the connection is particularly interesting when you look at a map: Entress Drive is barely a tenth of a mile from Brewster Lane, tucked into the same larger pocket of homes.

Entress was active in Gates, NY and Chili, NY during precisely the period when much of this area was developing. He later became involved in the local business community and helped establish what became the Gates-Chili Chamber of Commerce.

We even found a wonderful bit of period history. In 1957, a national homebuilding publication featured one of Entress’s Rochester-area Cape Cod designs. His description of it?

“The house with a future.”

We can’t tell you the complete history of every street or exactly how this particular tract evolved. But drive through the neighborhood today and the broader story is easy to see.

Classic Capes sit alongside Ranches, Split-Levels and Colonials. Most are comfortable rather than oversized, generally ranging from around 1,500 to 2,500 square feet. Lots are generous, garages are common, and after six or seven decades the trees and landscaping have matured around them.

These are homes that were built for everyday living.

And in the case of 9 Brewster Lane, one family has been doing exactly that for more than 70 years.

Living in This Part of Gates

One of the enduring advantages of this neighborhood is how many parts of the west side are within easy reach.

Chestnut Drive connects south toward Chili Avenue, while nearby Coldwater Road and Westside Drive provide convenient routes throughout Gates and Chili.

Chili Avenue remains one of the area’s primary commercial corridors, with Wegmans, restaurants, shopping and everyday services nearby. Continue south and you’ll reach Chili Center and the Town of Chili’s municipal and community facilities.

To the east, Westgate Plaza provides another concentration of shopping and services, while nearby I-490 makes downtown Rochester and communities throughout Monroe County readily accessible.

Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport is also only a short drive away — one of those conveniences that’s easy to overlook until it’s time for an early flight or an airport pickup.

Florence Brasser Elementary School is nearby, too. Interestingly, the school’s history reaches back much farther than most of the surrounding neighborhood. Its predecessor was a one-room schoolhouse dating to the nineteenth century, while the modern school and Gates Chili Central School District were taking shape during the same mid-century period when neighborhoods like this one were growing.

It’s a particularly Rochester kind of suburban landscape: older country roads and institutions surrounded by residential streets that filled in as the community expanded.

Today, this pocket of Chili feels settled and established, with mature yards and trees while remaining remarkably convenient to the commercial corridors, expressways and amenities of Rochester’s west side.

According to Angie…

“There’s something meaningful about walking into a home that has been owned by the same family since it was built. You can feel that it has been cared for and lived in. This one has great bones, a flexible Cape Cod floor plan and such a pretty yard. It doesn’t need to become something completely different — it just needs its next owner to make it theirs.”
