This is an area of contrasts. You’ll find traditional neighborhoods and village streets, but also farm fields, horse properties, wooded acreage and homes sitting on generous country lots. Drive north and Lake Ontario becomes part of the landscape. Head south or east and Brockport, Hamlin and the Greater Rochester area provide shopping, dining and everyday conveniences.

There are country roads to explore, farm markets along the way, sunsets that seem to stretch forever, and easy opportunities to get outside, whether that means boating and fishing on Lake Ontario, camping or hiking at Hamlin Beach, working in your own garden or simply enjoying a little more space around the house.
It’s a different rhythm from Rochester’s closer-in suburbs.
And sometimes that’s exactly the point.
Living in Kendall & Along the Lake Ontario Countryside
Kendall sits in northeastern Orleans County along the Lake Ontario shoreline, immediately west of Hamlin and Monroe County.
Agriculture remains an unmistakable part of the landscape. Orchards, farms, farm stands, open fields, wooded parcels and country homes create the scenery along the roads surrounding Kendall.
One of our team’s favorite examples is Hurd Orchards in nearby Holley. Hurd is also an AFB partner, so this one is personal for us. The family farm combines orchards and seasonal produce with a farm market, preserves, flowers and special events, exactly the sort of locally rooted agricultural business that helps give this part of Orleans County its character.
There are plenty of others. Partyka Farms is actually in Kendall and is another example of the area’s farm-market culture.
The result isn’t simply “rural.” It’s a landscape where agriculture is still visible and very much alive.
Roosevelt Highway & the Great Lakes Seaway Trail
Roosevelt Highway is also New York State Route 18, part of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail corridor across New York’s Lake Ontario shoreline. That makes the road in front of the property more than simply a route into Kendall.
For residents, it provides a remarkably straightforward east-west connection through the lakeshore communities.
Head west and the route carries you toward the Oak Orchard and Point Breeze area. Head east through Hamlin and you’re moving toward the Lake Ontario State Parkway, the Rochester region and eventually Charlotte and the Genesee River.
It’s one of those local routes that looks very different depending upon the season: orchards and fields, farm stands, lake-country scenery, brilliant fall color and the wide-open winter landscape.
The Lake Is Part of Life Here
Lake Ontario isn’t just something on a map north of Kendall.
The shoreline influences recreation throughout this part of the region.
To the east, Hamlin Beach State Park offers a sandy Lake Ontario beach, camping, picnic areas, hiking and biking trails, fishing and access to the Yanty Creek Marsh. New York State Parks lists 264 campsites and six miles of hiking and biking trails, along with opportunities for fishing, paddling, cross-country skiing and wildlife watching.
Boaters know the area particularly well.
Sandy Creek provides a protected Lake Ontario harbor in Hamlin and is home to the Brockport Yacht Club. The club describes its location as approximately 17 miles west of the Genesee River and 12 miles east of Oak Orchard, which gives a pretty good picture of where this stretch of shoreline sits in the larger Lake Ontario boating community.
And yes, there are places where the lake itself becomes the backdrop. Lures Restaurant and Bar sits at Bald Eagle Marina in Kendall with outdoor dining overlooking Lake Ontario.
Small Community, Bigger Backyard
One detail about 17082 Roosevelt Highway says a lot about its location: Kendall Junior/Senior High School is just down Roosevelt Highway from the property.
The school serves grades 7–12 and is part of the Kendall Central School District, a two-building district with its elementary school on Kendall Road.
Beyond Kendall itself, residents have several nearby communities to draw upon.
Hamlin connects the area east toward Monroe County and the Lake Ontario State Parkway, while Brockport provides a larger concentration of shopping, restaurants, services and other everyday conveniences.
That’s an important part of understanding life here. Country doesn’t necessarily mean isolated.
You can live among farms, woods and open land while still having Brockport, Hamlin and the Rochester region within reach.

What We Love About 17082 Roosevelt Highway
For us, it starts with the setting.
The home sits well back from the road, and its unusual orientation on the property turns the view away from Roosevelt Highway and toward the lawn and surrounding woods. Large windows in the main living area take advantage of that view and help make the outdoors part of the interior.
